IND. OFFICER GETS 13 YEARS IN FATAL CRASH: FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) — A former Indianapolis police officer who killed a man and seriously injured two others when he was driving drunk and crashed his police cruiser into two motorcycles stopped at a traffic light was sentenced Tuesday to 13 years in prison.

David Bisard was convicted last month on nine counts, the most serious of which was driving with a blood-alcohol content above 0.15 percent while in a fatal accident. The legal limit in Indiana is 0.08.

He resigned Monday from the police department. He had been suspended without pay since the 2010 crash that killed 30-year-old Eric Wells.

Allen County Superior Judge John Surbeck sentenced Bisard to a total of 16 years in prison but suspended the last three years. Prosecutors had requested a 22-year prison sentence with two years suspended, while Bisard's attorneys asked for 11 to 12 years, with several years suspended.

Bisard told the court that he is "remorseful beyond words" and accepts responsibility for the crash. But he said he would not accept responsibility for being intoxicated.

Bisard did admit he was drunk when he crashed his pickup truck in April 2013 in a separate incident. He said that DUI arrest caused him to lose the trust of his family and friends and made it difficult for people to believe he wasn't drunk at the time of the fatal crash on Aug. 6, 2010.

OFFICER DRESSED AS TURKEY PATROLS VEGAS CROSSWALKS : LAS VEGAS (AP) — A giant turkey is roving crosswalks in Las Vegas to squawk on drivers who don't yield to pedestrians.

Officers dressed in Thanksgiving bird finery are walking across the road Tuesday as part of a sting operation. It's the fifth annual appearance of the safety mascot dubbed "Butterball One."

Police waiting to the sides of the crosswalks are slapping drivers who don't stop with fines starting at $191.

The festive campaign underscores a sobering problem in southern Nevada. Safety advocates say 46 pedestrians have died so far this year in Clark County, where Las Vegas is located. That's ahead of last year's pace.

Butterball One is patrolling at Balzar Avenue and Martin Luther King Boulevard, near where two pedestrians were killed in two separate crashes since September.

GAY COUPLE WHO PROTESTED FOR LICENSE FINED 1 CENT: LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — A gay couple arrested after refusing to leave the county clerk's office where they had been refused a marriage license have been found guilty of trespassing and fined one cent.

The Rev. Maurice "Bojangles" Blanchard and Dominique James were arrested in January after refusing to leave at closing time.

Blanchard told The Courier-Journal after the verdict was returned it seemed the jury understood their stance and called it "a big victory."

Assistant Jefferson County Attorney Prosecutor Matthew Welch said evidence was overwhelming that the pair trespassed. But he left it to the jury to decide the amount of the fine.

The newspaper reported that the men faced a maximum fine of $250 for the charge of third-degree trespassing.

3 GIRLS SAY THEY WERE IMPRISONED IN ARIZONA HOME : TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Two people were arrested Tuesday after three girls told authorities that they have been imprisoned in an Arizona home for possibly the past two years.

Tucson police said the girls are siblings — ages 12, 13 and 17 — and their mother and stepfather have been arrested in a case that's being investigated as alleged child abuse and imprisonment.

Police said a 34-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman were booked into the Pima County Jail on suspicion of three counts of kidnapping, three counts of child abuse-emotional abuse and three counts of child abuse-physical abuse.

The man also was accused of one count of sexual abuse of a person under age 15, according to police, who didn't immediately know Tuesday night if the couple had attorneys.

MAN ACCUSED OF TAKING FRAMPTON'S LUGGAGE IN DENVER: DENVER (AP) — Police say luggage belonging to 70s rocker Peter Frampton was stolen by a man who's suspected of taking several other bags from Denver International Airport.

The Denver Post reported Tuesday that 52-year-old John Allen Papelbon told a police detective he snatched seven bags from the airport this year.

The detective who went to Papelbon's home in suburban Denver says he found a bag tag belonging to Frampton. The tag was the only thing recovered from Frampton's luggage, which was stolen in July.

Papelbon is due in court Dec. 10 for a preliminary hearing. He declined to comment to The Denver Post about the case.

Authorities say airport surveillance video from Oct. 27 shows a man matching Papelbon's description walking way with luggage.

2 CATS DIE AFTER BEING THROWN IN SF BAY: SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Two cats were killed after a man ripped them away from their owner and threw them into San Francisco Bay.

Animal Care and Control Capt. Vicky Goldbach says witnesses saw a man approach a woman at Pier 14 on Tuesday at about 4:20 p.m.

Goldbach says the man took all the woman's belongings — including a carrier that held both cats — and tossed them into the water.

She says authorities retrieved the victims' possessions but not before the cats had drowned.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the victim was too distraught to provide much information to investigators but that she said she didn't know the man who killed her animals.
