OCCUPY PROTESTER OWES OREGON CITY MORE THAN $7,000: PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A woman in a photograph that became a defining image of the monthlong Occupy Portland encampment owes more than $7,000 for legal expenses from her unsuccessful lawsuit against the Oregon city.

The 2011 photograph showed demonstrator Elizabeth Nichols being blasted with pepper spray as she opened her mouth to shout at a police officer.

A jury rejected her suit for $30,000 over the police pepper-spray incident, entitling the city of Portland to compensation.

The Oregonian reports (http://bit.ly/1eLC4r7) the city filed paperwork Wednesday listing what it cost to defend against the suit, including more than $5,000 for transcripts. It isn't seeking compensation for staff time.

A city lawyer, David Landrum, says he offered to forgo the expenses if Nichols agreed not to appeal.

But her lawyer, Benjamin Haile, says she's appealing because she believes there were errors at trial.

WASHINGTON BLOW DART SUSPECT: 'I'M A MORON' : COLFAX, Wash. (AP) — A man accused of shooting a woman and man with a blow dart in two separate attacks in Washington state has made his first court appearance on assault charges.

KREM-TV reports (http://bit.ly/1ejbCCi) 18-year-old Joseph Gillies of Tacoma appeared in court Thursday in Whitman County. He was released from jail until his next court appearance at the end of the month.

Gillies is accused of shooting a woman with a blow dart Jan. 12 on the Washington State University campus. He's also accused of hitting a man with a dart two days later while walking in Pullman.

Gillies told KREM he's sorry for the dart attacks but offered no explanation other than saying, "I'm a moron."

GA. CONGRESSMAN HOLDING DRAWING FOR FREE RIFLE: ATLANTA (AP) — A Georgia congressman is using his Senate campaign website to give away a free rifle.

An aide to Republican Paul Broun confirmed Friday that the congressman sent supporters an email inviting them to enter a drawing for an AR-15.

Broun wrote that the drawing is intended to affirm his support for the individual right to bear arms. He asserts in the email that the gun is one that President Barack Obama wants to ban. Broun tells supporters that Democrats and the liberal media support the president's mission.

The rifle is similar to the one used in the 2012 massacre at a Connecticut elementary school.
