GARDEN GROVE  (AP) — Police say a 13-year-old boy is being held in an Orange County juvenile hall after taking handgun and a loaded magazine to school.

Garden Grove police said in a statement Wednesday that officers who responded to a classroom at Jordan Intermediate School on Monday morning found a Colt Mark IV .38-caliber handgun in the boy’s backpack, and a loaded magazine in his pants pocket.

Police say the gun was registered to a family member of the boy, whose name has not been released because he is a minor.

Police say four students who saw the gun but didn’t speak up will also be punished. One of them will be transferred back to their previous school and the three others have been suspended.

Police are investigating why the boy took the gun to school.
