FAIRFIELD  (AP) — A 51-year-old California woman who is accused of intentionally drowning her grandson in a bathtub has been arrested, police said Wednesday.
Police said the grandmother drowned the 4-year-old boy in her bathtub Tuesday morning.
The boy’s name was not released. The AP typically does not identify abuse victims; it is not naming the woman because two other minor grandchildren were present.
Police spokesman Cleo Mayoral said it appears that multiple calls from the neighborhood reported the incident, but it wasn’t known how callers knew of the drowning.
Police and firefighters responded shortly before 11 a.m.
The boy was pronounced dead at a local hospital. An autopsy will be performed.
The grandmother was booked into the Solano County jail and is being held without bail, police said. She is scheduled to appear in court Thursday afternoon. Police and the Solano County District Attorney were not available for further comment Wednesday.
Mayoral says the boy’s mother has been told, but it’s not clear whether the father is aware of what happened.
Two other grandchildren, a 1-year-old girl and a 6-year-old girl, were also under the grandmother’s care. Police say they were not harmed.
It was not clear Wednesday if the grandmother has an attorney. But several extended relatives called her a loving and caring woman.
