uMERRIMACK, N.H. (AP) — Police say a New Hampshire woman is charged with shoving her golden retriever off a dock and standing by while the pet drowned.
Merrimack Police Chief Denise Roy called the incident earlier this month “disturbing.”
Sixty-six-year-old Nancy Bucciarelli was arrested Friday on a misdemeanor animal cruelty charge.
Witnesses said Bucciarelli stood by and watched on June 8 as her 11-year-old dog struggled in Naticook Lake in Merrimack, New Hampshire. Others jumped into the lake to help, but it was too late.
uMAN SAYS HE WAS DECEIVED WHEN HE BOUGHT TINY STRIP OF LAND: FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — A South Florida man thought he snagged a deal when he paid $9,100 in an online auction for what he thought was a villa. What he got was a 1-foot-by-100-foot (0.3-meter-by-30-meter) strip of land.
The land, valued at only $50, starts on a curb and goes under a wall separating two villas in the Spring Lake community and then out to the back of the lot.
An official tells the South Florida Sun Sentinel there’s not a lot Kerville Holness can do about his purchase.
Holness says he was deceived. He says property appraiser photos linked to the auction site shows a villa being on the parcel he made a bid on.
But the newspaper says the appraiser’s site and information on the county’s tax site show no building value.
uPOLICE: WOMAN JABBED AT FLORIDA SEA TURTLE NEST WITH STICK: MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (AP) — A woman has been accused of disturbing a sea turtle nest in Florida.
Miami Beach police officers on Saturday arrested 41-year-old Yaqun Lu. She is facing a felony charge of molesting marine turtles or eggs.
An arrest report says officers witnessed Lu using a wooden stick to jab at a nest as she was “stomping” around the nesting area.
The nest was in an area closed off from the public by sticks and yellow tape.
Officers say the eggs weren’t damaged.
Lu is a Chinese citizen who listed a Hudsonville, Michigan, address. The report says the Chinese consulate in Houston was notified about the arrest. Online records showed no attorney listed for her.
Sea turtles are protected by federal law, and Florida laws make it illegal to harm them or their offspring.
uBABE RUTH ROAD JERSEY SELLS AT AUCTION FOR $5.64 MILLION: NEW YORK (AP) — A Babe Ruth road jersey dating to 1928-30 has sold at auction for $5.64 million.
Hunt Auctions, which handled Saturday’s sale, says the price breaks a record for the most expensive piece of sports memorabilia ever sold. A Ruth jersey from 1920 previously sold for $4,415,658.
The auction was conducted at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees jersey was part of a collection of items that Ruth’s family put up for sale. His granddaughter, Linda Ruth Tosetti, says in a statement that a portion of the proceeds will go to charity.
uPROTESTERS STRIP, GET PAINTED IN TIMES SQUARE: NEW YORK (AP) — Several dozen people stripped naked and got their bodies painted in New York’s Times Square as part of what was billed as a protest against “divisiveness.”
The event Saturday was organized by body artist Andy Golub. He has staged similar nude Times Square protests in years past.
Golub said the world we’re living in “is very divisive.” He said people have “much more in common” than they are different.
Samantha Walsh traveled from Toronto to take part. Walsh, who uses a wheelchair, said body painting disrupts the way people think about “whose bodies are valuable.”
POLICE UNION: CHIEF VIOLATED LAW IN CASE OF 5 FIRED OFFICERS: ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — The president of the St. Paul police union says the city’s police chief broke a state law by revealing details about a case that cost five officers their jobs.
St. Paul Police Federation head Paul Kuntz said Friday that police Chief Todd Axtell gave “an incomplete and false narrative, forcing the media to fill in the blanks.” Federation attorney Chris Wachtler said he expects the union to file a grievance next week.
Axtell responded in a statement by calling Kuntz’s comments “untrue allegations.” The chief said he wants to hear the union’s position once it has requested and reviewed the files.
Axtell announced the firings on Thursday. He did not name the officers or give a detailed explanation, other than to say they failed to intervene in an assault last year.
