Three generations of Boys Scouts that have passed through Manteca Scout Group 423 are united in spirit – and maple syrup.

A nearly 20-year-old tradition continues this Saturday at Sequoia Heights Baptist Church along south Union Road, where the troop and pack members of Troop 423 will host their annual pancake breakfast.

The breakfast will include all the usual staples: pancakes, of course; eggs, sausage, as well as coffee and juice. Guests can also savor a small slice of history, too.

The breakfast began about 20 years ago, said Committee Chair K.C. Moebius, sustaining three generations of scout leadership and families of troop and pack members. Moebius said many of the volunteers today are the same faces you’d find in photos a decade or two old.

However, the event is more than just a tradition; a familiar “things to do” on the community calendar.

With the help – and hungry mouths of the community – the pancake breakfast finances the activities of the Troop 423, Moebius said, allowing the leadership in place to create a safe and fun learning environment.

“This is pretty much our biggie,” Moebius said. “This is for everybody and the operating cost. It helps keep the program running.”

The projects that the money will fund are many, ranging from service projects around the church campus to day adventures, such as hikes along the coast or trips to nearby Pinecrest Lake.

For instance, money from last year’s pancake breakfast was recently used to pour a walking path at Sequoia Heights Baptist Church, allowing for safe passage to a storage shed. Before, Moebius said, the path was infested with goatheads.

The money will also be used to finance badges and awards, as well as purchase books for the library and sponsor a trip to Hogan Lake, where Troop 423 will assist the Army Corps of Engineers on National Park Clean-Up Day.

The breakfast is also used as a teaching moment for the young boys, who learn about responsibility and standards, leadership and service. Members of the troop and pack double as servers during the breakfast, which is scheduled to run from 8 to 11 a.m.

Naturally, the lessons are applied to a badge.

“We’re teaching them proper food handling. Making sure they wash their hands. And then also service, where they’re learning to help others,” Moebius said. “They’re learning to serve others. It’s a great teaching tool. We’ve been doing it with this unit now for 20 years.”

Tickets are available at the door.

Prices are $5 for adults and $2.50 for children under 10 years of age.
