A traffic accident at Main Street and Yosemite Avenue at about 1:40 Monday morning turned into a hit and run that was observed by an on-duty gang suppression officer Detective Lance Casqueiro who attempted to catch up with the vehicle as it fled northbound on Main Street.

Manteca Police officer Steve Smith was in a marked vehicle and got behind the suspect vehicle at North and Center streets activating his lights and siren.  A pursuit continued northbound on North Main Street and ended some three minutes later when the suspect turned onto Birchwood Avenue.

Police said the pursuit reached speeds of up to 80 miles an hour until they ordered Salvador Polanco, 23, out of his vehicle transporting him to the San Joaquin County Jail in French Camp.  After booking the suspect was transported to county hospital for a medical clearance.

Police said no one was injured in the incident – suspect or officers.
