The popular Portuguese cultural classes offered through the Manteca Parks and Recreation Department and taught by Mary Gomes De. Pino are back. One class will be held for one hour in the afternoon from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.; the other for two hours in the evening from 6 to 8 p.m. Both classes will start Wednesday, Sept. 9. Both are also held at the Manteca Senior Center, 295 Cherry Lane and will run through Nov. 4 for a total of nine sessions.

Those who want to enroll in the afternoon class must register at the Senior Center. Participants in this class must be at least 50 years old.

Students in the evening class must register at the Parks and Recreation Department, 252 Magnolia Street in Manteca. Non-resident and late fees apply in this session as well. The minimum age for the evening class is 14; any adult may register regardless of age.

Fee for the afternoon class is $30 per student; $50 per person for the evening class. The fees cover class materials, a potluck dinner, and a folk dance lesson.

Del Pino said the purpose of the class is to “reacquaint those of Portuguese ancestry with their Portuguese roots – history, traditions, music, food, language.”
