Most of the time it isn’t hard to find Diana Simmons.

Just head down to the Manteca Public Library, search for her favorite chair, and more than likely you’ll find her indulging in any one of a number of books.

Since relocating to Manteca from Ohio in 1975, Simmons had a short list of necessities for the town that she would eventually call home. A quality library topped the list.

“Just a few weeks ago, I was interested in a book about pins, and I inquired about it. Before I knew it, the library had purchased the book, and between me and two staffers we read it as quickly as possible,” Simmons said. “That’s the kind of customer service you don’t find very many places.”

With reading topping the list of her favorite hobbies, it isn’t a stretch to think that she’d spend her time in a library brushing up on dramas, mysteries, and both fiction and non-fiction.

But with most of her friends being avid readers too, the list of books to add to the queue simply never dries up – adding additional books on a weekly basis to cross off of her list.

Spending so much time at the library, however, has shed new light onto a multitude of scenarios.

For one, Simmons says she can’t help but notice the large amount of youth that frequent the library to do everything from homework to surf the Internet to partake in the programs geared specifically for them. As long as they’re in the safe confines of the library, she says, they’re off the streets and staying out of trouble – something that a lot of non-profits struggle with on a daily basis.

Secondly, Simmons also says that she’s met more than a few seniors like herself that come in on a regular basis – most that hit the newspapers in order to stay caught up on current events.

“It’s a great place for people to get together, and the staff here is excellent,” Simmons said. “Sometimes I’ve got other things going on, but other times you can find me right here in this chair all week long.”
