Recruiting swim party this Sunday for Cub Scouts

Arnold Urbina III is looking forward to that day when he’s officially a member of the Boys Scout of America.
As a Cub Scout, the local 10-year-old is working up the ranks. He’s currently a Webelos 1.
From there, Urbina and others in Pack 423 will soon become Webelos 2, which is the level before becomingx a Boys Scout. He and others climbed up the same ladder, going from Tigers to Wolves; Wolves to Bears; and Bears to Webelos 1.
  “I will become a Boys Scout in another year,” Urbina said Thursday at Lincoln Park, 245 S. Powers Ave., Manteca.
It’s there that the scouts will conduct their annual Regatta Crossover Swim party, from 1 to 6 p.m., on Sunday, May 31.
Youngsters will engage of in regatta races, using their own small-scaled boats made of balsa wood equipped with a sail and rudder, and placed on a track constructed of a pair of roof gutters. In order to make the regatta scoot across the water, youngsters simply stand behind their design and blow by exhaling on the sail.
 The boat-racing event will consist of at least six heats, with one member of the pack emerging victorious.
But members such as Kyle Silveira, 10, who is a first-year scout, is looking more for the fun along the swim party in the community pool to follow.
He got the urge to join the scouts, with his folks going online to discover Pack 423.
Those interested in becoming a scout are encouraged to stop by the Regatta Crossover Swim party as part of the recruiting drive.
The group, incidentally, meets each Monday from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Sequoia Heights Baptist Church, 1050 S. Union Road.
