You can take a sledge hammer to a car, toss rings for wine, and partake in a carnival atmosphere of fun and help fund a safe alternative for over 1,600 youth in Manteca and Lathrop at the same time.

It is all a part of the revamped Boys & Girls Telethon that is now in its 36th year.

The event will take place on Friday, Nov. 13, at the Boys & Girls Club, 545 W. Alameda St.

Manteca Mayor Steve DeBrum will serve as “head barker” and auctioneer for the telethon that is the largest source of funding for the club. Other celebrity barkers will include Phil Waterford who will encourage attendees to take out their frustrations on a car and Councilman Mike Morowit among others.

Jay Holmes is coordinating the midway games that will begin at 5 p.m. The dessert social is at 7 p.m. followed by the live auction at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets are $10 each for the dessert social. Free popcorn will be served while the midway is open with guests having the opportunity to buy carnival-style food if they wish such as cotton candy, hot dogs, and nachos among other items.

There also will be a silent auction and no host bar.

The telephone banks will be up and running from 1 to 8 p.m. A small army of volunteers will call on community members in a bid to provide a safe haven for kids.

Fire Chief Kirk Waters is in charge of the telethon phone bank along with Realtor Pat Robledo.

If you would like to help with the phones and pledge collecting contact Waters at 456-8300.
