Eighth-grade students at Sequoia School were left with more souvenirs and memories of their many years together on Monday.

Together, they celebrated their promotion from elementary school at Manteca High’s Winter Gymnasium.

About 103 eighth-grade students were honored during the hour-long event led by valedictorian Yaritzza Jacobo. She and Suleima Morales had perfect 4.0 grade point averages during the past two years.

“I’ve been here since kindergarten,” said Jacobo. “I never thought I’d be valedictorian.”

She had been together with most of her classmates during that time. “I bet everyone has their special memories of Sequoia School,” Jacobo said.

Sequoia’s eighth-grade Class of 2010 marched in led by Steven Ellison, who needed the support of crutches as a result of a broken foot.

He injured the foot some two weeks ago as a result of a dirt bike accident.

The school band under the direction of Wendell Dotson performed the traditional tune, “Pomp and Circumstance.”

Jason Laughlin led his class along with family, friends and guests – included were Manteca Unified officials, Wendy King, Cheryl Meeker, Margaret Barnett and former Sequoia School principal Jacqui Breitenbucher – in the flag.

First-year principal Lisa Herrin recognized the top academic students and presented members of the eighth-grade class receiving their promotion certificates.
