Shots rang out shortly before noon Saturday in a quiet residential neighborhood across from Veritas School at the intersection of Pagola Avenue and Collins Street where two men in their early 20s were struck by gunfire — one in the leg and the other in the buttocks.

One man was described by police as a Hispanic and the other a Caucasian. They were transported to Doctors Hospital and San Joaquin County Hospital respectively. Doctors Hospital was reportedly locked down in a security precaution after receiving the shooting victim in their emergency department. Police said their wounds were not life threatening.

Officers said one of the victims was from Tracy and the other resided in Manteca.

Police recovered 14 bullet casings that were spread across the intersection from automatic weapon gunfire. One victim was found on the grass on the front lawn of a home at the southeast corner of the intersection located just south of the Promenade Shops at Orchard Valley that’s anchored by Bass Pro Shops.

Bullets also peppered two homes directly to the east of that house where a second victim collapsed in a driveway.  Yellow crime scene tape cordoned off the roadway as well as the home to the east where the second victim was located.

Officers said the shooters sped away from the crime scene in what witnesses said appeared to be an American made blue, four door sedan.

A 2007 BMW sedan parked at the curbing near where one victim fell had one bullet hole in the right side of its bumper area which appeared to possibly be a 9 mm round. The car had no registration and officers decided to have it towed. It had only a paper advertising paper plates from a car dealer in Stockton.

Witnesses voiced rumors that an argument near the theater near Bass Pro had fueled the shooting, however police were unable to substantiate that information. There were two young boys playing in Antigua Park across the street when the shooting occurred, but they were unhurt.  No one had reportedly been at the elementary school across the street, however the principal did respond to the scene. The neighborhood park is used often for Manteca Youth Soccer tournament games.

Manteca Police Gang Suppression Unit detectives were also called to the scene to help with the investigation however police were careful to say they could not say the shooting was gang related.
