Spring has sprung for Manteca Garden Club

Spring has arrived and the Manteca Garden Club is more than ready to embrace it.
Between now and the merry month of May are community events focusing on the beautification of public places in the perennial National Tree City, showcasing Manteca’s private edens, and increasing public awareness to the environmental benefits of gardening.
The group of green thumb hobbyists launched the opening salvo of this year’s garden club events when it selected the winner of the 2016 student art competition. The contest is part of the club’s effort to advertise its annual Mother’s Day-weekend garden tour by using the winning art work for the tour poster, flyers and brochures.
The garden tour, featuring the private paradise of four homeowners and the Biblical Garden of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, is set for Saturday, May 7, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tickets are $15 each and will be on sale starting the first week of April at various Manteca and Ripon businesses.
The Garden Club is also gearing up for the following group activities and public events:
April 29 — Arbor Day tree planting at Woodward Park. This is an annual project of the club as part of its continuing community beautification effort. Many of the trees found in public places such as the Manteca Library Park, the library landscaping along Center Street and the entrance from the parking lot, and in many public parks were donated by the garden club.
May 7 — Manteca Garden Tour from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Refreshments will be served at the last featured garden where the door prize and opportunity drawing for various garden items will be held. All proceeds from this single fund-raising project of the club is used to fund the group’s various projects including annual scholarships awarded to graduating seniors at Manteca’s high school campuses, community beautification, among others.
May 21 — Art in the Park, a fun event held at the Library Park on West Center Street in downtown Manteca. The Garden Club is taking part in this event in support of the Mayor’s Committee on the Arts.
June 18 — Garden club members are taking part in the Manteca Public Library’s Reading Club activity.
June 20 — Installation of new Garden Club officers for 2016-2017.
