EARLY START FOR DELTA WATER WEED TREATMENT: STOCKTON (AP) — Officials are getting a jump on clearing thick masses of invasive plants that clog marinas and frustrate boaters along the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta.
The state's Department of Boating and Waterways will begin treatment as early as this month to remove water hyacinth. In past years the treatment season for hyacinth didn't begin until July.
Spokeswoman Gloria Sandoval tells the newspaper that herbicide can be applied once the agency receives biological clearance from the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Marine Fisheries Service that it won't endanger fish species.
Sandoval says the state is seeking five-year permits to treat water hyacinth and Egeria Densa, the two main Delta invasive plants, rather than the one-year permits issued in years past.
POLICE BUST TEEN BURGLARS: STOCKTON - Two teenage boys, 15 and 17, were arrested on Sunday morning after police say they attempted to break into a home on the 2200 block of Stern Place.
Stockton officers were dispatched to the home at 10:21 a.m. in response to a possible burglary in progress after witnesses observed the teens jump over a fence with socks on their hands, and attempt to enter the home through a rear window, said police.
The youths left before accessing the house, but were detained by police a short distance away.
According to police, the boys had rocks in their pockets when apprehended.
MAN WANTED BY POLICE IN SHOOTING TURNS SELF IN: STOCKTON- A man wanted in connection with the shooting of a 32-year-old woman and 39-year-old man in Stockton last month, turned himself in to Alameda County authorities on Monday.
According to Stockton Police, Dwight Smith, 25, was sought in connection with the shooting of his male and female roommates in their W. Bianchi Road apartment on Feb 27.
Following the shooting, police and SWAT blocked off the area to search for Smith, but following a lengthy standoff, discovered he had fled the area.
An ensuing investigation revealed Smith had chased his roommates around their apartment with a shotgun following an argument. At some point during the chase, Smith fired a shot, hitting both individuals, said police.
Police said Smith saw himself on television several times after the incident and turned himself in to authorities in Alameda County Monday morning.
MAN ARRESTED FOR IMPERSONATING DEPUTY: STOCKTON - A man was arrested Friday for impersonating a San Joaquin County sheriff's deputy.
Vieng Say Keosavang contacted a man last week saying if he wanted a job in booking then he would have to give Keosavang with $75, a DMV print out and ID, Deputy Dave Konecny said. Keosavang told the man to put the items in an envelope and he will pick them up later.
The man told deputies that Keosavang claimed he worked for the San Joaquin Sheriff's Department and was dressed in a black uniform with a San Joaquin County Sheriff's Department patch, a name tag and a black duty belt.
Konecny said on Friday the man, with a deputy present, called Keosavang and set up a meet where he could drop off the items Keosavang wanted. Deputies arrested Keosavang on the 7900 block of West Lane in Stockton when he showed up for the meet.
When deputies searched Keosavang's home on the 1500 block of East 10th Street in Stockton, they found a San Joaquin County sheriff's deputy shirt, a duty belt, black uniform pants, a sheriff's baseball cap, a Stockton Police Department baseball cap and a Department of Corrections baseball cap, Konecny said.
Neigbors say Keosavang suited up every day in a uniform; he'd leave, but he'd always be back in less than half an hour.
Keosavang was booked into San Joaquin County Jail for impersonating an officer and petty theft.
BEER THEFT ENDS WITH SHOTS FIRED: STOCKTON— A suspect tried stealing two cases of beer, only to drop the loot and shoot a gun in the air when confronted.
The incident happened at the Liquor Barrel along N Wilson Way Sunday. Two people, the store clerk and a patron, were inside the business at the time.
Around 9:34 p.m., the suspect entered and took two 12 packs of beer.
Both the clerk and the patron chased after the man. But, the suspect abruptly dropped the cases of beer and punched the patron.
Then, the suspect allegedly pulled out a handgun and fired three shots into the air. He then ran from the scene.
