SAN DIEGO (AP) — Federal authorities say three men were found in the trunk of a car that sped through a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint and then crashed into a van in San Diego County.

The Union-Tribune newspaper reports  the driver of the Ford Focus and the men in the trunk were hospitalized with minor injuries following the crash Saturday in Jamul, about 20 miles east of downtown San Diego.

Border Patrol spokesman Mark Endicott says nobody in the van was hurt.

Endicott could not confirm the nationality of the men in the trunk, but said agents suspect they were brought into the U.S. illegally.

Officials say the driver accelerated through the checkpoint on State Route 94 before slamming into the van at a bend in the road.
