Tree falls on home, traps trio for short time

FAIRFAX  (AP) — Northern California residents are cleaning up after a big storm that sent a massive oak tree toppling onto a Marin County home.

The massive oak tree briefly trapped three people in the house in Fairfax on Tuesday evening, but they were able to get out uninjured.

Neighbors said the falling tree sounded like a jet plane or an earthquake. It also took out power lines and crushed a car.

Authorities say another tree fell on the roof of a home in Larkspur a few miles away. The residents were home at the time but were also uninjured.

Strong winds and heavy rains across the San Francisco Bay area left roads flooded and led to the cancellation of more than 100 flights at San Francisco International Airport.

Elderly woman dies after rescue from Oakland fire

OAKLAND (AP) — An elderly woman has died after being rescued from an early morning fire that tore through an Oakland home.

Authorities tell KTVU-TV that the 92-year-old woman died Wednesday morning not long after being pulled from the smoke-filled structure.

The fire was reported around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday at the single-story house in the West Oakland neighborhood.

Emotional neighbors gathered as firefighters brought the woman out of the house and began performing CPR. She was then taken to a hospital.

Oakland Fire Department Battalion Chief Robert Lipp says firefighters putting out the flames found the woman inside. The single-alarm blaze was quickly brought under control.

The cause of fire is still under investigation. A medical examiner will determine the exact cause of the woman's death.

Plea deal in broad daylight killing in Oakland

OAKLAND  (AP) — Two young men have pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter for the unprovoked daylight beating death of a man in downtown Oakland a year ago.

The San Francisco says the plea deal reached with 20-year-old Lavonte Drummer and 19-year-old Dominic Davis calls for 11 years in prison.

Drummer and Davis had been charged with murder for the April 2010 death of 59-year-old Tian Sheng Yu of San Francisco and beating of his then-27-year-old son Jin Cheng Yu.

Prosecutors say Drummer and Davis were upset about their lives, drinking rum and looking for someone to attack.

The father and son were on their way to shop for coins at a jewelry store when they were beaten.
