WOMAN, 18,  FACING CHARGES IN TORCHING OF BED

REDWOOD CITY . (AP) — An 18-year-old Redwood City woman is facing charges that she set her ex-boyfriend's bed on fire while he was sleeping.

Jacqueline Alexandra Rivera was arraigned on Wednesday on charges of attempted murder, arson and residential burglary. She asked for a court-appointed attorney, but did not enter a plea.

Prosecutors say the 21-year-old man awoke to his bed on fire on April 26 and screamed for his father, who put the flames out with a garden hose. He suffered minor burns on his arms and hands.

He and Rivera had apparently dated for several months. Prosecutors say Rivera told someone that the man had cheated on her.

She allegedly showed up at his house on the day of the incident to talk about their relationship.

Man shot by SF police suspect in mom's slaying

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Authorities say the man shot and killed by San Francisco police during a standoff at an apartment was a suspect in his mother's slaying.

The man was identified on Thursday as 41-year-old Dennis Hughes. Hughes was shot by a police sharpshooter the night before after authorities say he began shooting at officers through the door and walls of his girlfriend's apartment and set fires inside the unit, where he had barricaded himself.

Rohnert Park police had gone there to interview Hughes in his mother's death. Sixty-six-year-old Dianne Hughes was found dead of blunt force injury to the head at her home in Rohnert Park on Tuesday.

Rohnert Park police say Dennis Hughes was living with his mother, but she was in the process of having him leave the house.

Employee at Napa State Hospital injured in assault

NAPA  (AP) — A patient at Napa State Hospital has been arrested in connection with an assault that left an employee injured.

Hospital spokeswoman Deborah Moore announced the arrest on Wednesday, a day after the assault. She did not release the patient's name or provide details about the incident although she did say the staff member was treated at a local hospital.

A union representative said  the employee — a psychiatric technician — was injured while staff members were placing a patient in a restraint.

Brad Leggs of the psychiatric technicians' union says the incident occurred in an area housing non-criminal patients.

Napa State has been roiled in recent years by patient attacks on staff members, among them the strangling of a psychiatric technician in October 2010.

Fire destroys townhouses

SANTA CLARA  (AP) — Santa Clara authorities say a fire that shot flames 10 stories into the air gutted three townhouses that were under construction, but did not cause any injuries.

The five-alarm blaze was reported around 10 p.m. on Wednesday and attracted dozens of spectators. Fire Chief Bill Kelly says the first units to respond immediately called for backup, concerned that the blaze could spread to nearby townhomes that were already built and occupied.

About 50 firefighters responded. The blaze was brought under control about an hour later.
