Tombstones uncovered at SF beach
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Tombstones that were used years ago to shore up the seawall at San Francisco's Ocean Beach are once again visible.
The San Francisco Chronicle reports that strong winds and shifting sands uncovered the old grave markers this week.
One of them — a nearly intact marble tombstone — carries the name of Delia Presby Oliver, who died at the age of 26 on Apr. 9, 1890. Oliver's gravestone was uncovered in a sand drift at the end of Rivera Street.
San Francisco historian John Martini says gravestones turned up in the same area some years ago. The tombstones and thousands like it were used throughout the city for various purposes, including landfill.
The National Park Service, which manages Ocean Beach, says it does not plan to remove the gravestones.
Interstate 580 to close for PG&E repair work
OAKLAND (AP) — A fire that threatened homes in the Oakland Hills area Friday afternoon will be causing delays on Interstate 580 later Friday when the freeway is temporarily shut down so Pacific Gas & Electric crews can do repair work.
Officials say both directions of the freeway will be closed at 9 p.m. so the crews can complete repair work after a fire scorched a wooded area and threatened homes. The freeway closure is expected to last about 30 minutes to an hour.
The closure comes after a fire was started when an elderly woman lost control of her car and hit a power pole.
Charges recommended for teen in fatal crash
CONCORD (AP) — Concord police say they will recommend that Contra Costa County prosecutors charge a 17-year-old boy with vehicular manslaughter for running over and killing a father and his 9-year-old daughter out on a bicycle ride.
The teen was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter after his Cadillac Escalade struck 41-year-old Solaiman Nuri and his 9-year-old daughter, Hadessa as they were riding on a sidewalk on April 7.
Police say a preliminary investigation showed that the teen had been speeding in the 45-mph zone and had made an unsafe lane change, possibly to get around another car.
Man, 24, shot & killed at San Jose karaoke bar
SAN JOSE (AP) — San Jose police say they are investigating the early morning fatal shooting of a man at a karaoke bar.
Police say officers responding to a 911 call of a shooting at a bar around 2:30 a.m. Friday found a 24-year-old man suffering from at least one gunshot wound.
He was later pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been released.
Officers later placed another man in handcuffs but it is unknown if he has any connection with the shooting.
