FAMILY NO LONGER SEEKS KIDNAPPED CALIF. TEEN'S DNA: SAN DIEGO (AP) — The sister of a man suspected of kidnapping a 16-year-old girl and killing the teen's mother and younger brother said she no longer wants paternity tests to determine if the suspect fathered the children.
James Lee DiMaggio's sister Lora Robinson said Tuesday she hasn't asked for DNA and she doesn't plan to. Last week, a DiMaggio family spokesman said she wanted DNA of Hannah and Ethan Anderson to give her a sense of closure in her older brother's death.
Robinson said the request was prompted by rumors that her brother fathered the children but that she doesn't think a test is needed.
DiMaggio, 40, was killed by FBI agents in the Idaho wilderness Aug. 10 after allegedly killing Christina and Ethan Anderson, whose remains were found in his burned home in Boulevard, 65 miles east of San Diego. Hannah Anderson was rescued and returned safely to California.
The Anderson family said last week that DiMaggio didn't meet Brett and Christina Anderson until Christina was six months pregnant with Hannah and that Brett Anderson's DNA was used to identify the remains of 8-year-old Ethan.
Robinson said she had no explanation for her brother's alleged crimes and that she was "extremely disappointed" in the San Diego County Sherriff’s Department investigation.
"They should come back to us and explain what happened," she said. "They could come forward with evidence — evidence and facts instead of verbally coming out and saying he did it. Where's the proof?"
SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY DEPUTY TO GET $885,000: SAN BERNARDINO (AP) — San Bernardino County has agreed to pay $885,000 to a former sheriff's deputy who claims he was fired for taking time off to care for his ailing mother.
The Riverside Press-Enterprise says the county learned Tuesday that Travis Bauer had agreed to a lawsuit settlement.
Besides the money, the county will rescind Bauer's firing and instead retroactively accept his resignation.
Bauer joined the Sheriff's Department in 2003 and was fired in 2011.
Bauer says he was harassed for taking time off to care for his mother, who has arthritis, bipolar disorder and blackouts from seizures and strokes.
County officials say Bauer was granted all the leave time he requested and was fired for poor work performance and misconduct.
MAN CONVICTED OF RAPING, KILLING TEEN GIRL IN 1985: FRESNO (AP) — A Fresno County Superior Court jury has convicted a man of killing a teenager nearly three decades ago.
The Fresno Bee reports that 56-year-old Eddie Ricky Nealy was found guilty Wednesday of raping and murdering 14-year-old Jody Wolfe in August 1985. The jury must now decide whether Nealy will get the death penalty.
The teen's nude body was discovered floating face up in a canal a week after she had run away from home. An autopsy revealed she died of blunt-force trauma to the head.
DNA evidence from the semen found on the teen's body linked Nealy, who was 28 years old at the time, to the rape and killing.
Nealy denied the charges. His attorneys said he had consensual sex with the girl, but did not hurt her.
SAN MATEO MAN DROWNS AT TAHOE AFTER FALLING OFF PADDLEBOARD: INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. (AP) — Authorities say a 42-year-old California man drowned at Lake Tahoe after falling off a paddleboard.
Kenneth Campo of San Mateo was 200 to 300 yards offshore at Sand Harbor State Park when he fell in the water Friday afternoon.
Nevada Department of Wildlife spokesman Edwin Lyngar says the paddleboard was equipped with a life jacket and foot leash, but Campo wore neither.
An employee from a rental company retrieved Campo from about 20 feet underwater.
Emergency responders were unsuccessful in trying to resuscitate him. Campo was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
