SOUTH GATE  (AP) — Police in a Los Angeles suburb have shot and killed a gunman they say tried to carjack a driver at a fast-food restaurant.

The man died at the scene shortly before 5 a.m. Sunday in South Gate.

Authorities say an hour earlier, the gunman tried to take a car from a motorist at a local Jack In the Box.

The theft failed but as officers were taking a report the suspect was spotted nearby.

Authorities say he ran off, made a second failed carjacking attempt, fled into some yards and then emerged with a gun on a sidewalk where he confronted officers and was killed.
