WINTON  (AP) — A Central Valley man is dead after authorities say he was struck by flying debris when a train slammed into a vehicle.

Thirty-two-year-old Aaron Schindler was among three people in a Dodge Caravan when it became stuck Saturday night on the tracks in Winton, a town about 10 miles northwest of Merced.

He and the other occupants got out before the oncoming Amtrak train struck the minivan. But the California Highway Patrol says Schindler was hit by debris sent flying during the crash.

He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Officer Jason Schoonhoven said it appears the minivan had mechanical problems.

The train was carrying more than 60 passengers, none of whom was injured.
