Convicts wearing GPS went unsupervised

SANTA ANA  (AP) — A memo from Orange County probation officials shows that more than a dozen convicts required to wear GPS units were left unsupervised for days.

The Orange County Register reported late Friday that the July 25 memo to the county’s board of supervisors outlined how Irvine-based Sentinel Offender Services also failed to take required photos of participants in the electronic monitoring program.

The newspaper says Sentinel’s contract was terminated this week.

The problems were detected as law enforcement officials rely more heavily on electronic monitoring amid a swell in the local jail population.

Documents reviewed by the Register show Sentinel attributed most of the errors to mechanical problems.

Calls to Sentinel by the Register were not returned Friday.
