FARMERSVILLE  (AP) — Authorities are investigating the death of a man whose body was found in a Northern California canal two days after he was allegedly hit by a car while taking a walk.

Tulare County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Ashley Ritchie says searchers found the body of 30-year-old Timothy Shields Monday in a canal near Farmersville.

Ritchie said Tuesday that Shield’s girlfriend called authorities Saturday night and said they were walking along the canal when a car hit him and knocked him into the water.

She says searchers looked by land, air and water, but his body wasn’t located until more than 40 hours later.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating the death.

CHP Officer Steve Beal says officials have found no evidence of a crash and have little information on the vehicle.
