LOS ANGELES (AP) — Police say the man suspected of shooting up a Los Angeles police station and wounding an officer had been rejected after applying to become a policeman.

Cmdr. Andrew Smith says 29-year-old Daniel C. Yealu applied to LAPD’s personnel department but never made it to the Police Academy. Smith says he doesn’t know when the application was made.

Police say Yealu walked into a police station Monday night, told an officer “I have a complaint,” and opened fire with a handgun.

He was critically wounded by a desk officer who also was wounded.

Police say Yealu had an assault rifle in the car and other guns and cases filled with ammunition were found at his home. Records show Yealu had a gun permit last year but it was cancelled.

Yealu’s father, Danny Yealu, tells the Los Angeles Times that his son had told him last year he was making good money as a security guard but had applied to the Police Academy.
