WILLITS (AP) — Mendocino County authorities say a man was arrested after apparently shooting himself in the face while driving on U.S. 101 with a California Highway Patrol car behind him.

Kevin Norton was being trailed by a CHP officer near Willits late Monday when the officer heard gunfire and saw a window of Norton’s car explode.

Officials say Norton pulled into a parking lot, where he was arrested. He was then taken to a hospital for treatment of a minor gunshot wound to his cheek.

The newspaper says the CHP officer was following Norton in response to an earlier call that a man was holding a shotgun to his head outside a Redwood Valley bar.
