SAN DIMAS  (AP) — A driver has died after a truck tire smashed into his windshield on a Southern California freeway.

The California Highway Patrol says 62-year-old David A. Ballejos of San Bernardino died at the scene Thursday on Interstate 210.

A CHP report says Ballejos was driving a Toyota Camry on the eastbound freeway in San Dimas around 5:30 a.m. when a rear tire came off a Ford Ranger pickup going the other way.

The tire bounced across lanes and smashed into the Camry's hood and windshield. Ballejos received major head and face injuries.

The Camry veered to the freeway shoulder, struck the soundwall and a call box, crossed an onramp and struck a second soundwall before stopping.

Six other cars hit the loose tire but there were no other injuries.
