DEL MAR . (AP) — San Diego police say a car drove onto a sidewalk and struck nine children in front of a Del Mar school.
It happened shortly after 2:30 p.m. Friday in front of Del Mar Heights Elementary School as classes were letting out.
Authorities say the 70-year-old driver was picking up her grandchildren at the school and was backing into a parking spot when she struck a car, panicked and hit the gas.
The car ran onto the sidewalk, hitting nine children and an adult, including an 11-month-old in a stroller.
Police say the most seriously injured was a 5-year-old who suffered a broken leg.
A number of the children were taken to hospitals but authorities say none of the injuries are considered life-threatening.
