BIG PINE  (AP) — A wildfire burning near a main highway in the eastern Sierra Nevada is nearly surrounded.

The 1,103-acre blaze west of Highway 395 in Inyo County was more than 85 percent contained Monday morning. State fire Battalion Chief Julie Hutchinson says there are no active flames and crews are concentrating on dousing hotspots to avoid flareups — especially since the Inyo County area could see strong winds and 100-degree highs in the next few days.

The fire erupted on Saturday, briefly threatening about 300 homes and prompting authorities to urge evacuations in the community of Big Pine. However, the request was lifted Sunday night and no homes currently are in danger.

SAN BERNARDINO . (AP) — Officials say a wildfire has spread over 75 acres in the San Bernardino Mountains above the city of San Bernardino, and firefighters taking it on have suffered heat-related injuries amid triple-digit temperatures.

US Forest Service spokesman Bill Sapp says it's unknown how severe the injuries may be.

Sapp says the blaze is 10 percent contained.

The fire erupted shortly before 2 p.m. Monday along Highway 18 in Waterman Canyon, where residents have been asked to voluntarily leave.

The area is in the San Bernardino National Forest between the city of San Bernardino and the mountain community of Crestline.

Forest Service, state and local agency firefighters are responding.

Temperatures are topping 100 degrees and humidity levels are low in the inland region east of Los Angeles.

Wildfire consumes 1,600

acres in Colusa County

MAXWELL  (AP) — Crews battling a wildfire in western Colusa County are hoping to take advantage of lighter winds.

The Sites Complex fire near the farming community of Maxwell has consumed about 1,600 acres so far. It was 10 percent contained as of Monday, a day after it started.

State fire officials say the blaze began as five separate fires. Three of those fires were contained and the remaining two have burned together.

Although the fire came close to a few ranches, no structures are currently threatened. More than 1,000 firefighters are working on the blaze.

California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection spokesman Daniel Berlant says winds have died down. But crews will still have to deal with high temperatures and dry conditions.

Fire closes campgrounds

in Mendocino forest

WILLITS  (AP) — A wildfire in the Mendocino National Forest has led to the closure of campgrounds and the evacuation of a handful of homes.

The fire was estimated at around 2,500 acres on Monday morning, two days after it began. It was 10 percent contained.

Fire information officer Adrienne Freeman says it is burning in steep terrain and has been aided by high temperatures and dry conditions.

More than 300 firefighters are working on the blaze. The cause has not been determined.
