Firefighter among 7 arrested in beach city rioting

HUNTINGTON BEACH  (AP) — A firefighter was among those arrested from a raucous mob that broke windows, looted and fought in the streets of Huntington Beach after the U.S. Open of Surfing.

The Orange County Register reported Tuesday that 30-year-old Michael Lytle of Anaheim was arrested on suspicion of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest Sunday night.

City of Fullerton human resources director Gretchen Beatty says Lytle is a city firefighter and has been placed on leave for an internal investigation.

The Los Angeles Times reports that six other men were arrested, all of them from Southern California and between 18 and 28 years old.

More than 100 police officers worked break up the melee. Some fired pepper balls and rubber projectiles.

The crowd toppled portable toilets, threw items from rooftops and smashed car windows.
