SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The main approach to the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco is set to come down, as crews replace it with a new $1.1 billion parkway.

Officials announced on Monday that construction workers will demolish Doyle Drive at the end of the month. The roadway will be closed from 8 p.m. on Friday, April 27 to 5 a.m. on Monday, April 30 as dozens of hydraulic hammers bring the structure down and a temporary bypass is set up.

Residents are being warned of noise and traffic jams throughout the weekend. Traffic to the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco will be redirected to Highway 1.

Doyle Drive has been deemed seismically unsafe.

It is being replaced with the 1.6-mile Presidio Parkway. The project will include two tunnels when it is completed.

UC Davis pepper-spray

 report to be unveiled

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The University of California is preparing to release a report on the pepper-spraying of student protesters by UC Davis police.

A judge on Tuesday approved a settlement requiring officials to remove the names of most police officers who were interviewed about or involved in the incident before making public the findings of a task force that looked into the Nov. 28 clash.

The UC police officers' union had sued to keep the document under wraps, saying that naming officers could subject them to harassment.

The university system now plans to unveil the report with most of the names redacted at noon Wednesday on the UC Davis web site.

SF attorney: Mayor had r

ight to suspend sheriff

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — San Francisco's city attorney says the mayor had the right to suspend the sheriff after the law enforcement official pleaded guilty in a domestic violence case involving his Venezuelan actress wife.

Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi has filed a lawsuit against the city to get his job back after he was suspended following his guilty plea.

He says he shouldn't have been suspended since the incident occurred before he was sworn into office.

City Attorney Dennis Herrera disputed that in court papers Monday, saying that if Mirkarimi were right, there would be a period of complete immunity for elected officials between the time they are elected and when they take office.

Mirkarimi was accused of bruising Eliana Lopez's arm on New Year's Eve. He pleaded guilty last month to misdemeanor false imprisonment.

It has gained weight. An abscess was also removed from its neck.

The newspaper reports that it could be returned to the wild next week.

The sea lion, dubbed "Al Catraz," is believed to be just over a year old. It was found on rocks under a concrete dock where ferries to Alcatraz land on March 21.
