LOS ANGELES (AP) — A school assembly at Harvard-Westlake school is being held so students and staff can have time together to grieve the death of popular and talented student Justin Carr.
Monday's assembly was scheduled when the 11th grader died Friday after collapsing during a workout in the school's pool. KCBS-TV says Carr's parents told school officials Sunday that their son had cardiomyopathy, a weakening of the heart muscle.
School officials say Carr was a scholar, athlete, singer and an extraordinary young man.
The school newspaper says he was scheduled to dance at a concert next week and planned to go to Europe with school singers during spring break. He was also a leader in the Black Leadership Awareness and Culture Club.
Harvard-Westlake is located in the Studio City section of Los Angeles.
