Lodi police say child discharged officer's gun

LODI  (AP) — Police in Lodi say a young boy walked up behind an officer and discharged his handgun during a community meeting.

The boy, believed to be between 6 and 8 years old, was not hurt, and the officer suffered a minor injury. The incident occurred on Aug. 24, but was disclosed by police in a news release on Sunday. According to police, a SWAT team member was displaying tactical equipment to children at the meeting.

Lt. Sierra Brucia says the gun that went off was secured in a holster at the time. Police are investigating how the incident occurred, and say it is fortunate it didn't end in tragedy.
