HAWTHORNE  (AP) — A Southern California man has been charged with trying to kill four police officers in a shootout that injured one of them.

James Louis Boyd III was charged Monday with four counts each of attempted murder and assault on a peace officer with a semiautomatic gun, and one count each of shooting at an occupied car and firing a gun with gross negligence.

Prosecutors say Boyd got in a fight with his girlfriend at a hotel in the Los Angeles suburb of Hawthorne and fired a rifle into the air.

Police say Boyd shot at responding police officers twice, wounding one of them in the leg.

Boyd also was hit. Boyd faces life in prison if convicted.
