MODESTO  (AP) — Authorities in central California say a man who walked on to tracks carrying cans has died after being struck by a train in Modesto.

The 25-year-old man, whose identity has not been released, was hit by the train Wednesday morning and later died at the hospital.

Witnesses told Modesto police that the man, who was carrying a bag of aluminum cans, walked past the railroad crossing arm with his head down as the train approached.

The train's horn was blowing and the train could not be stopped before hitting the man.

Police say it's unknown whether the man's death was an accident or a suicide.
