REDONDO BEACH  (AP) — A Southern California man fatally shot by police had an airsoft pistol, a device that fires plastic projectiles for simulated combat games.

The Redondo Beach Police Department says it received 911 calls Thursday afternoon reporting an individual holding a gun, and responding officers received an update that the person was chasing and shooting at someone with a firearm.

A police statement says without elaboration that officers arrived on the scene, encountered the subject and a shooting occurred.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, which sent homicide detectives to assist in the investigation, says the man was struck by gunfire at least once and was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Sheriff’s officials say what was reported to be a firearm was determined to be an airsoft gun.
