MANCHESTER (AP) — Family members say a 59-year-old hunter and his dog were found alive nearly a week after going missing on a hunting trip in a remote Northern California wilderness area.

Dave Stornetta’s wife, Kelly, told the Santa Rosa Press Democrat her son called her just before 4 p.m. Tuesday to report that Stornetta and his dog had been found by a helicopter she had chartered. The crew spotted smoke from a camp fire, rappelled down to the forest and followed footprints to locate Stornetta.

Officials say he appeared in good health.

Stornetta, of Mendocino County, was hunting deer in the Yolla Bolly-Middle Eel Wilderness in southeastern Trinity County when he failed to meet up with his son as planned last Wednesday.

Stornetta was an experienced outdoorsman, but had only a sweatshirt and a rifle with him.
