WATERFORD . (AP) — Authorities say a mother and baby daughter died after their car struck an embankment and flipped over into a canal Monday afternoon near Waterford.
A spokesman for the California Highway Patrol says that the 22-year-old woman, who was driving, died after being taken to a Modesto hospital. Her 1-year-old daughter, who was in a car seat, was pronounced dead at the same hospital.
The mother was driving 50 to 60 mph when she lost control and hit a Turlock Irrigation District embankment. Witnesses pulled her and the child from the water and performed CPR until paramedics arrived.
A passenger, 22-year-old Paul Seutter, swam ashore with moderate injuries and has been released from the hospital.
The spokesman declined to name the mother or child because their relatives are still being contacted.
