LA COUNTY TO RESTORE CROSS TO OFFICIAL SEAL: LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles County is restoring a cross to its official seal, nearly a decade after one was removed from the original design.

County supervisors voted 3-2 on Tuesday to put a cross atop the seal's depiction of the historic San Gabriel Mission.

The original seal had a cross over the Hollywood Bowl but it was removed when the seal was redesigned in 2004 after the ACLU of Southern California threatened legal action.

An image of the mission was added but the building didn't have a cross at the time because it was undergoing earthquake retrofitting.

The cross was reattached in 2009, so two supervisors argued the seal should be adjusted for historical accuracy.

However, the ACLU says putting the religious symbol on the seal is divisive and probably unconstitutional.

FORMER MARINE'S AK-47 CONVICTION TOSSED: RIVERSIDE  (AP) — A former Marine from Southern California has been released from prison after an appellate court overturned his conviction for possessing a chrome-plated AK-47 that may have belonged to a member of Saddam Hussein's royal guard.

The Riverside Press-Enterprise reports the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled last month that Joel Cleve Miller should have been allowed to present testimony from two witnesses, including his ex-wife, to back his claim that he was framed.

The U.S. Attorney's Office hasn't said whether it will seek a retrial.

The 42-year-old Miller served nine months of his two-year sentence for the 2010 conviction.

Prosecutors said the AK-47 came from one of Hussein's palaces. The Hemet resident served in Iraq for 14 months.

PIPE BOMB FOUND OUTSIDE EL DORADO PROBATION OFFICE : PLACERVILLE . (AP) — Authorities say a pipe bomb found outside an El Dorado County Probation Department office did not blow up because it apparently malfunctioned.

The Sacramento Bee reports device was on the ground in front of the main entrance of the office in Shingle Springs at about 7 a.m. Monday. Deputies say it was an 8-inch-long section of pipe capped at both ends, with a makeshift fuse attached.

The sheriff's bomb squad defused the device, and there were no injuries to people or property.

About 20 people inside the building were evacuated. They were able to return about three hours later.

Brian Richart, the county's chief probation officer, tells the newspaper it is not yet known whether surveillance cameras recorded anyone planting the device.
