MADERA FAMILY CLAIMS FUNERAL HOME MISHANDLED BODY: MADERA  (AP) — A family is suing a Central California funeral home claiming it disfigured the body of their loved one and prepared the wrong body for viewing.

he widow and children of 87-year-old Wrainey Farmer Sr. are suing Smith Manor Grace Chapel of Madera for negligence causing emotional and mental distress.

The complaint was filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court. The family's lawyer is Mark Geragos, the celebrity attorney who represented Scott Peterson, the Modesto man convicted of killing his wife.

The suit says when Farmer's family arrived at the funeral home for a viewing, they were shocked to find another body in the casket dressed in Farmer's favorite suit and tie.

The funeral home's attorney concedes the wrong body was displayed, but says the mistake was corrected before a public viewing.

 

BAY AREA OIL STORAGE FACILITY REPORT QUESTIONED: PITTSBURG  (AP) — The state attorney general's office is raising concerns about a draft environmental report that looks at the impacts of a proposed oil storage and transfer facility in a San Francisco Bay Area city.

The office of Attorney General Kamala Harris says in a letter to the City of Pittsburg that the report fails to adequately disclose and analyze the storage facility's impacts on local air quality. It also says the report does not address the risk of potential accidents.

The Contra Costa Times reports (http://bit.ly/LP3vGY) that the letter was submitted last week.

The proposed WesPac Pittsburg Energy Infrastructure Project would lie on the western edge of downtown Pittsburg and supply Bay Area refineries with crude oil that would come in by water and train.

5 women hurt after van hits LA-area care center

ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) — Five elderly women inside a Southern California adult day care center were left with minor injuries after a passenger van drove into the building.

Arcadia Fire Department spokeswoman Beth Stogner told the Los Angeles Times (http://lat.ms/1jwCX8K) that an employee of the center was driving the van with no passengers inside when it hit the building on Tuesday afternoon.

Five women were taken to Arcadia Methodist hospital including one with chest pains and shortness of breath, but Stogner called all the injuries minor.

Paramedics examined the driver, but he refused treatment.

 

TENSE STANDOFF OUTSIDE SAN JOSE APARTMENT ENDS: SAN JOSE  (AP) — San Jose police have arrested a man suspected of assaulting an officer after a standoff during which the suspect barricaded himself in an apartment building.

The San Jose Mercury News reports (http://bit.ly/1dMZnTx) that the unidentified man was taken into custody a little past 12 p.m. Tuesday, about four hours after police say officers approached him for behaving suspiciously.

Police spokesman Albert Morales says the suspect began to fight with the officers, trying unsuccessfully to grab one of their guns before running into a nearby apartment.

During the ensuing standoff, police speaking in English and Spanish blared their sirens and used loudspeakers to try to convince the suspect to come out.
