WOMAN KILLED, BABY INJURED CROSSING FREMONT STREET: FREMONT  (AP) — A 19-year-old woman has been killed and a 3-month-old boy she was carry has life-threatening injuries after they were struck by a vehicle on New Year's Eve in Fremont.

Authorities say Ashley Capuchin was killed around 10 p.m. Tuesday after she got into an argument and stormed out into a busy thoroughfare with the baby. Capuchin, her 17-year-old sister and the baby were all hit by a vehicle as they crossed a median.

Capuchin was taken to a hospital where she died. The baby was listed in critical condition. The 17-year-old sister was treated at a hospital for injuries that were not life-threatening.

The 64-year-old driver stopped after the crash and was cooperative. Authorities say there was no sign of alcohol or drugs being involved.

BART BOARD MEMBERS APPROVE REVISED LABOR CONTRACT: OAKLAND  (AP) — The San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit agency's board has overwhelmingly approved a revised labor deal with two of its largest unions to finally resolve months of contentious negotiations.

The Board on Thursday voted 8 to 1 to approve a four-year contract to settle a dispute over paid medical leave for employees that arose in November after BART management, the ATU 1555 and the SEIU 1021 previously reached a deal ending a second strike in October.

The new deal dropped a controversial clause granting union members up to six weeks of paid family medical leave that BART officials said was mistakenly included and would cost $44 million if one-third of the agency's workers took advantage of it.

Instead, workers will get an extended bereavement leave and potential bonuses.

The unions are expected to vote on the deal later this month.

2 ARRESTED IN NEW YEAR'S EVE FATAL CRASHES: SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Drivers in New Year's Eve car crashes that left two pedestrians dead in San Francisco have been arrested.

Officer Albie Esparza says 57-year-old Syed Muzaffar of Union City was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and failure to yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk.

A 6-year-old girl died in the crash, which occurred at about 8 p.m., and her mother and brother were injured, Esparza says.

Also, 69-year-old Giampaolo Boschetti was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and failure to stop at a stop sign.

In that crash, which occurred at about 3 p.m., 86-year-old Zhen Guang Ng was killed, police say.

Boschetti and Muzaffar both posted $300,100 bail Wednesday.
