• WOMAN SUSPECTED OF ABANDONING NEWBORN: GALT (AP) — A 30-year-old woman is in custody on suspicion of attempted murder after police say she abandoned her newborn girl in a flower bed in Sacramento County minutes after giving birth. Dwanda Mahoney — described as a transient by police — was being held without bail Thursday, a day after her arrest. Police say they received a report of a crying baby in a flower bed at a home in Galt around 5:30 a.m. Tuesday. The baby had been born about 20 minutes earlier. She is expected to survive. Galt police Lt. Brian Kalinowski says Mahoney was on the front porch of the home and initially denied giving birth to the child. She was arrested after receiving medical clearance.

• GUNMAN FIRES, STRIKES COPS: A gunman who fired several shots at a pair of Southern California police officers, hitting one, and held two people hostage for nearly nine hours was booked Thursday on suspicion of attempted murder, a sheriff’s official said. Christopher Warsaw, 45, was being held on $1 million bail, said Los Angeles County sheriff’s Deputy Guillermina Saldana. Warsaw was arrested late Wednesday after engaging police in a nearly nine-hour standoff after taking his girlfriend and her 14-year-old daughter hostage, authorities said. He fired at officers who responded to a family disturbance call from the home that came at 12:30 p.m. The worst injury occurred when an Inglewood policeman was shot in his bulletproof vest.

• ’HONEYMOONERS’ ACTRESS KEAN DEAD:
Jane Kean, a diverse performer who got her start in musical theater but was best known as Trixie alongside Jackie Gleason on a TV revival of “The Honeymooners,” has died. She was 90. Kean, of Toluca Lake, died Tuesday at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank where she was taken after a fall that led to a hemorrhagic stroke, her niece, Deirdre Wolpert, said Thursday. Kean first started working with Jackie Gleason in the 1940s, when they were both on the vaudeville circuit.
