STOCKTON (AP) — The surviving suspect in a bank robbery that left a hostage and two suspects dead in a shootout with police pleaded not guilty in San Joaquin County Superior Court.

Jaime Ramos, 19, was in court Monday in connection with a Bank of the West heist in Stockton, California on July 16.

Ramos is charged with three counts of murder in the killing of a hostage, who authorities say was hit by police gunfire when Ramos used her as a shield in a final shootout. Two other heist suspects were also killed.

He also faces numerous attempted murder counts for allegedly firing at police.

Ramos will be back in court in January for a preliminary hearing, which will decide if there is enough evidence to hold a trial, although the case could go to a grand jury.
