SANTA ANA  (AP) — Orange County wants state permission to charge reckless people for the cost of rescuing them.

The Orange County Register says county supervisors voted Tuesday to propose state legislation and Assemblyman Don Wagner has agreed to carry a bill.

It would permit counties and cities to recover rescue costs for people who put themselves in peril through illegal or reckless acts.

The move comes a week after supervisors decided they lacked authority to charge $160,000 in rescue costs to two hikers who were lost for days after wandering off trail in the Cleveland National Forest.

Nineteen-year-old Nicolas Cendoya and 18-year-old Kyndall Jack were rescued last month. Authorities say methamphetamine was later found in Cendoya's car and he's been charged with felony possession.
