OXNARD  (AP) — Oxnard police say officers shot and critically wounded a woman they believed was suicidal after she pointed a gun at them that turned out to be a replica.

Police spokesman Miguel Lopez said Thursday that two apparent firearms found on the 42-year-old woman when she was shot at a park a day earlier were in fact realistic-looking replicas.

Ventura County’s mental health agency told police Wednesday that a woman had called them and said she had a loaded gun at Del Sol Park and was going to kill herself.

Lopez says officers found the woman, who would not cooperate and appeared armed.

Police say she pointed one of the replica guns at the officers, and two shot her.

The woman, whose name hasn’t been released, was hospitalized with critical injuries.
