SAN LUIS OBISPO  (AP) — A panel created to develop a strategic vision for decommissioning of California’s Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant wants the process to begin immediately after the Central Coast facility shuts down in the middle of the next decade.

The report Tuesday by the Diablo Canyon Decommissioning Engagement Panel will be sent to Pacific Gas & Electric and the California Public Utilities Commission.

The panel seeks to have radiological decontamination completed 10 years after shutdown, avoiding regulations allowing up to a 60-year delay.

Other recommendations would conserve the 12,000 acres (4,856 hectares) around the plant in perpetuity for managed public access, and repurpose some facilities to reduce the amount of demolition and create economic opportunities.

The twin-reactor plant’s Unit 1 is scheduled for shutdown in 2024, followed by Unit 2 in 2025.
