THOUSAND OAKS  (AP) — The city of Thousand Oaks has lost some of its namesake trees, and community activists are determined to see it doesn’t happen again.

More than 170 trees were lost this year to make way for a shopping center face-lift, including stately oaks, the tree that adorns the city seal.

That’s even after plans were altered and some trees were spared from the saw.

Officials say no laws were broken. But the suburban Los Angeles city is appointing a commission to review protections for large trees, including oaks and black walnuts.

The Los Angeles Times reported Saturday the city also suspended an exemption that allowed the removal of an any oak tree — regardless of size or age — if it had been planted by the property owner.
