SACRAMENTO (AP) — An early morning shootout in a Sacramento parking lot on Sunday left one man dead and at least four others wounded, authorities said.

The shootings occurred around 1 a.m. Sunday when a large group of people gathered in a parking lot on Fulton Avenue in Sacramento, the Sacramento Bee   reported.

Two fights broke out and more than one person fired a weapon, killing a 20-year-old man, Sacramento County Sheriff’s officials said. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene and his name hasn’t been released by authorities.

Investigators haven’t determined what led to the confrontation and shootings. They’re asking the public for help with the investigation.

Angelo Mares, who was present when the shooting broke out last night, said the victim was a close friend who was killed by a stray bullet.

“He got caught in the crossfire. He got hit in the back of the head,” Mares told the Sacramento Bee. “We were both smoking cigarettes. People were just arguing and we were watching them fight.”

Lea Waterman said she had just arrived at the Hookah Lounge bar to celebrate her 19th birthday when she heard bursts of gunfire.

“I just dropped to the ground,” she said. “I heard about 12 shots.”
