Southern California basking in record high temperatures

LOS ANGELES (AP) — While the East Coast shivers, Southern California is basking in unseasonably warm weather and the National Weather Service predicts it will continue through Friday.

Downtown Los Angeles hit around 80 on Thursday and some desert areas had record highs for the date.

The 84 at Palmdale’s airport topped the 1971 record by four degrees. Lancaster’s 84 beat the 1957 record of 79.

At Lake Elsinore, the high of 91 smashed a 1907 record of 88.

A weak offshore flow and high pressure aloft are keeping things warm — and also dry.

Downtown LA has received less than a quarter-inch of rain this month. Rain totals are more than an inch below normal to date and nearly 8 inches below normal for the rain year that began in July.
