SALINAS THIEF ASSAULTS, ROBS AND SHOOTS DEPOSITOR: SALINAS  (AP) — Salinas police say a man headed for a Northridge Mall bank to make a deposit had to be treated at a hospital after being robbed and shot in the leg.

Police tell The Monterey County Herald that the victim was getting out of his car with a money bag in his hand Monday evening when he was confronted by a masked man with a gun who demanded the cash.

The victim refused and there was a struggle for the gun but police say the robber was able pull the gun away, snatch the bag and shoot the victim.

Police say the gunman ran across the street to a parking lot where it appears an accomplice with a car was waiting.

LA UNIFIED SCHOOL BOARD OKS 10-DAY FURLOUGH PACTS; LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Unified School District board has approved a series of agreements with the district's labor unions that call for employees to take 10 unpaid furlough days in the next school year.

The board OK'd the agreements on Tuesday as a measure that will allow the district to save the jobs of about 4,500 teachers and thousands of other employees.

The savings will also enable the district to keep most of its adult and early education programs that had been on the chopping block, but will shorten the school year by five instructional days.

The agreements still need to be ratified by the unions' rank-and-file members, including teachers, school police, cafeteria workers and construction workers.

If voters approve tax increase measures in November, the furlough days could be rescinded.

LA UNIFIED REMOVES PARCEL TAX FROM NOVEMBER BALLOT: LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Unified School District board will not ask voters to approve a districtwide parcel tax this November because other tax measures are already on the ballot.

The board voted Tuesday to postpone the parcel tax until after the fall election at Superintendent John Deasy's recommendation.

Deasy says voters should focus on the two other measures on the ballot that would funnel money into school district coffers across the state.

He says a third tax initiative could prove overwhelming to local voters.

The district had planned to ask property owners to pay an extra $298 a year for five years to raise $255 million.

Under the statewide measures, voters will be asked to extend a sales tax increase and raises taxes on wealthy residents.

SUSPECTED COCKFIGHTING OPERATION BUSTED IN VISALIA: VISALIA  (AP) — Authorities have busted what is believed to be a massive cockfighting operation in Central California.

Tulare County officials said Tuesday the raid in Visalia led to two arrests, the rescue of 388 birds and the seizure of more than 1,100 cockfighting knives.

Officials say Juan Carlos Gonzalez and his wife, Leticia Aguilar Gonzalez, were arrested and each charged with 1,107 counts related to cockfighting. They say Gonzales is a U.S. distributor for a Mexican company suspected of selling cockfighting paraphernalia.

The Humane Society assisted Tulare County Animal Control in the investigation and raid. They say it resulted in the largest seizure of cockfighting knives in U.S. history.

All 50 states ban cockfighting, when two roosters are made to fight until one is killed or critically injured.

GOLD TAKEN FROM COURTHOUSE VALUED AT $1.2M : YREKA  (AP) — Large chunks of gold stolen in February from a lobby display case at a far Northern California courthouse have been appraised at more than $1.2 million.

The Siskiyou Daily News reports that Siskiyou County officials brought in a gemologist who determined the value with the help of smaller pieces of gold that were left behind in the display case.

The county is now seeking reimbursement from its insurance carrier.

Thieves broke into the courthouse in Yreka on Feb. 1, smashed the case and made off with the gold. Much of the gold in the county's collection was donated by miners and other residents over the past century. Some pieces were also purchased with county funds.

'YOUNG AND RESTLESS' ACTOR TO HAVE HEART SURGERY: LOS ANGELES (AP) — The 7-year-old actor best known as the boy behind the Darth Vadar mask in a popular car commercial shown during last year's Super Bowl is having open heart surgery.

Max Page plays Reed on the top-rated CBS soap opera "The Young and the Restless." CBS spokeswoman Elise Bromberg says he will have surgery Thursday to replace his pulmonary valve and repair a hole in his heart at Children's Hospital Los Angeles.

Max was born with a congenital heart defect and has undergone multiple surgeries.

Bromberg says that Max told his mother that he didn't have a choice, and that he "might as well go through it with a good attitude."

Max is expected to be hospitalized for about five days.

INDEPENDENT PANEL BELIEVES YACHT STRUCK ISLAND: SAN DIEGO (AP) — An independent review panel investigating the deaths of four sailors said it believes the 37-foot sailboat Aegean ran aground on North Coronado Island off the Mexican coast on April 28 during the Newport to Ensenada Race.

The US Sailing Independent Review announced its finding Tuesday. The panel drew its conclusion after gathering information from race organizers, collecting data from the Aegean's track during the race and meeting with the U.S. Coast Guard San Diego Sector's investigation team. A full report from US Sailing is expected by the end of July, including recommendations to the sailing community.

Coast Guard spokesman Lt. Dave McCarthy declined to comment on the panel's findings. He said he believed the Coast Guard was close to completing its own investigation.

Race officials originally believed the Aegean was destroyed in a collision with a larger ship in the middle of the night. That theory was undercut when a website that tracks boats by GPS showed the Aegean's course heading straight into the rocky island, which rises sharply out of the Pacific Ocean southwest of San Diego.

SUSPECTED VANDALS CRASH PLANES AT CALIF. AIRPORT: MONTAGUE  (AP) — Authorities are looking for suspected vandals who crashed a small plane at a Northern California airport into another aircraft, causing an estimated $250,000 in damage.

Siskiyou County sheriff's deputies found the damaged aircraft on the runway of Montague Airport early Monday morning. Sheriff's officials say two other planes were also vandalized and a nearby hangar was burglarized.

Federal and state agencies, including the FBI and California Department of Justice, have been called in to help with the investigation.
